Just south of Coimbra, less than an hour to the North is Coninbriga and one of the finest examples of Roman Ruins in Europe, with only about one third of the site excavated so far. easy to find and easy to park, a visit is time well spent.

Ticket-office

If you are in to Ancient History, it is worth buying a guide book before you go round, or even join a guided tour. There is also a museum which may be worth visiting first ,if only to see a scale model of the site “as it was in Roman days.”

There are great Roman and Moorish influences around this area and a trip a few miles north to the University city of Coimbra is well worth while, particularly to the University itself , perched on the topof a very large hill with superb views over the river and surrounding area
