Less than an hours drive away is Golega and the National Horse Fair staged every November. The horse fair has been celebrated since the 18th century , but was formerly called the Sao Martinho Feira until the change in 1972.
Golega is a very important centre for the breeding , training and sales of the Lusitano Horse, and for the week of the fair many of the surrounding Quinta’s have events on their premises during the day.
For the duration of the Fair the small sleepy village (population approx 5500) is taken over for the celebration of the horse and all its disciplines, . People come from all over the world for this event and for the final evening’s you will be fortunate to be able to park within a kilometer or so and although the main events are in the town square, it is very definitely standing room only.
Golegã is also called “The Capital of the Horse” and as the saying goes “if you have got it, flaunt it” and that they do in style. This is one Horse Fair NOT to miss.
